Following on from Saxon Motorsports extremely successful Diesel engine race cars in 2014 we decided to develop a car with potential for not just a class win but overall potential. We decided to keep the very efficient, tried and tested 1 Series chassis and look for a suitable engine from the BMW range.
After considering the 6 cylinder and V8 petrol engines we opted for the S85 V10 engine from the E60 M5 and M6. The engine is beautifully made from aluminium and magnesium and is surprisingly compact fitting very well into the E87 chassis. In conjunction with Daly Engineering in the USA we developed a dry sump system which allowed us to install the engine much lower in the chassis. We then set about developing the 5.0litre engine. The original engine utilises Alusil bores which are very effective in a production engine but are not as suitable for a racing unit therefor we fit our own liners and pistons. Most of the racing we do is endurance based so we wanted reliability and performance rather than outright power. The reliability of the big ends was an issue even on the road cars so we developed our own shells which along with modified cranks have eliminated the problem. So with modified crankshaft and pistons, Pectel engine management and a bespoke exhaust system we were producing a reliable 580 BHP.
We then went on to develop a 5.8 Litre version with oversize pistons and a stroked crank, this version can develop 680 BHP.
This season we have obtained permission to race the V10 at the Nurburgring in class SP 3 albeit with a maximum of 500 BHP.
We are pleased to quote customers for complete engines, race developed parts or engine mapping.
