Saxon - About Us

Nick and Tom Barrow

Although the Saxon name has been in use since Nick’s Rallying day’s, Saxon Motorsport as you see it now went into business in 1999 when a demand for reliably built, competitive Kart engines needed to be fulfilled.

Initially focussed around Nick’s Son and Daughter’s racing, Saxon Motorsport’s service and reputation grew rapidly until we were building and supplying Engines, Chassis, Parts and Race Support for multiple classes across the UK and Europe.

These years of karting success took a natural transition in to car racing during 2009, initially competing in the National and Club Formula Ford 1600 class. During this time Saxon Motorsport installed their Rolling Road Dyno to develop and optimise their own Formula Ford Kent engines in a demanding and competitive class with success. This soon expanded to engine and car hire for customer drivers bringing Podiums and Wins.

In parallel to the Formula Ford Single seater program, Saxon took on the formidable task of building a BMW1 Series GTR Endurance Touring Car for use in races across the UK and Europe. Seeing the potential in the BMW Diesel engines of the time, Saxon chose the Bosch Motorsport MS15.2 ECU to optimise the package for the endurance racing world. After extensive R&D using the in-house Rolling Road facility, the car was ready for the circuit and impressed on multiple outings, winning it’s class regularly in the VLN Endurance series around the legendary Nurburgring-Nordschliefe with drivers from all over the world including Team Owner Nick Barrow.

Further development was undertaken and a lightweight Chassis #02 was built with an evolved N57S Engine along with Sequential Paddleshift and Bosch Motorsport ABS. The car was even more impressive than the first taking further Class Wins at the Nurburgring as well as victories in the 24h Series which visited tracks all across Europe.

Following on, a Chassis #03 was built, this time using a very different power unit. A 5.0lV10 Petrol Engine was chosen and developed, as always in-house. Originally derived from the BMW E60 M5 the engine was well known for various lubrication and bearing issues. Once this issue had been identified and corrected, a reliable powerful engine could be built and the car developed a colossal 650hp at 8000RPM. Again raced in VLN,GT Cup and Dutch Supercar Challenge, this car raised eyebrows wherever it raced!
