Name: David Robinson
Education: Automotive Engineering, Loughborough University (First Class Hons)
Current Series: Caterham R300 Superlight 2015
Born in 1988 I started racing karts at the age of 9 with national success at Cadet, Junior and Senior levels. Spiralling costs meant that I had to stop racing karts at the age of 18, but not before having become a seeded driver at all levels, experienced driving instruction at Bedford Autodrome, and reached the final round of the Double Six Racing Scholarship.
At Loughborough University I was also involved with the Uni karting team (three times British Universities Champion) and Loughborough Formula Student (check them out at lumotorsport.com) whilst studying for a degree in Automotive Engineering (MEng). A fairly hectic student lifestyle that also left some time for getting out on the bike (mountain and road) and getting to the gym.
2011 saw me back behind the wheel again, albeit this time in a Caterham 7 competing in the Caterham Academy Series. Initial testing was extremely positive with fastest laps and lap records being set and after a year of learning I finished 3rd in the championship.
2011 ended on a high with a fantastic final round at Rockingham Motor Speedway in Corby. Fastest in practise, pole position, two race wins, two fastest laps and a lap record sealing the Caterham Autumn Trophy win.
But it was 2012 that really saw the success take off in earnest. Jumping two classes into the Caterham Tracksport Series, I took 9 podiums on my way to the title and it was a further honour to be recognised by Autosport Magazine as having won one of the most bitterly fought championships of the year.
The target for 2013 was to continue with this form in the Caterham Supersport series. After a tough season I emerged with 13 podiums from 13 finishes, 7 wins and a championship title.
Swiftly following this was a step up to the premier UK Caterham series, finishing as runner up in 2014 and claiming the title in 2015 with a record 9 wins from 12 races. In addition I have had the opportunity to represent Caterham UK in Taiwan and Colombia, claiming wins in the national series there.
2016 is the first season out of Caterhams and having already experienced international success with Saxon Motorsport in Germany and Spain I am looking to sportscars for the next opportunity.
