Getting Started

If you want to find out more about karting, the best thing to do is go to your local track or circuit and ask questions. Karters are a friendly lot! You can call us with any questions too or join us at a race meeting.

Licensed or unlicensed?

One important decision to make is whether you want to be licensed or not.

Having a licence simply means you can take part in the Motor Sport Association’s club meetings, national championships and compete nationwide.

To get a licence you need to buy a novice kart driver ‘Starting Karting’ pack from the Motor Sports Association. You’ll then need to pass an approved training course from an Association of Racing Kart Schools (ARKS). Before you drive in your first race meeting you’ll need to apply for your competition licence. (You’ll find details of all these organisations in Useful Links.)

If you decide to stay unlicensed you can still race. There are many kart tracks around the country as well as the ones licensed by the Motor Sports Association. They all have their own race meetings and championships, so you won’t miss out on any of the excitement.

Which class?

Another important decision is which class you want to race in. Our Classes area will help you make a decision. You’ll also want to check which classes your local track races, as that will obviously affect your decision.
